What is a bifold door?

Accoya wood bifold doors with two panels

A bifold door is an opening that differs significantly from a traditional door. Bifold doors are generally made up of several panels, meaning they can create large openings. However, they have a very space-efficient design; rather than swinging open like French doors, bifolds are fitted to runners. The door slides open while the additional panels fold up and stack against the wall.

Bifolds are becoming increasingly popular, and many people are choosing them over traditional patio or French doors

Why are bifold doors so popular?

The main reasons people choose bifold doors is because they’re convenient and practical, plus they create stunning entryways that immediately grab your attention.

Innovative, space-saving design

Where traditional doors are not so good for rooms where space is a commodity, bi-folding doors are more adaptable and can be fitted to much larger or smaller entrances. In fact, they can be fitted internally as a stylish way to move between rooms, or as pantry and wardrobe doors if necessary.

Externally, they are most frequently installed as a passage between your home and the outside world. When the doors are open, they leave a large aperture without taking up your internal space, letting you move freely between the inside and out.

Open your home to nature

One of their greatest benefits is the beautiful views that they can create. External doors fitted with glass panels can open your home to a picturesque view, a colourful garden, or your private patio area. Opening your home to nature, you can get the best of both worlds by combining indoors and out. While bifolds can draw in fresh air and natural light during summer, quality doors are purpose-built to withstand harsh weather conditions throughout the colder months too.

Here at Reddish Joinery, we install internal bifold doors and 2 different types of external bifolds: aluminium and timber.

Aluminium bifold doors

High performance aluminium doorsFeaturing slimline frames built from low maintenance and ultra-durable aluminium, aluminium bifolds ooze with contemporary charm. Within the frames, you can find polyamide thermal barriers that reduce heat transfer, allowing your home to stay warm in winter for less. They’re also fitted with low-e glass, which reflects the sun rays, so your home won’t overheat in summer either.

Timber bifold doors
