Reddish Joinery – fully devoted to reducing our carbon footprint

Here at Reddish Joinery, we’re committed to utilising sustainable materials during our manufacturing processes wherever possible. And as a part of this commitment, we can supply any of our timber products in Accoya® wood. A material that offers a number of fantastic benefits, it’s also one of the most sustainably sourced timbers around.

A responsibly sourced material designed for longevity

Accoya® wood has been sourced from fast-growing forests, which are properly maintained to ensure they remain sustainable. It has zero toxicity and provides dimensional stability and durability that exceeds even the best tropical hardwoods.

Expected to last around 80 years, the extended lifespan on offer with Accoya means it’s a better carbon sink than less durable timbers. Plus, it’s able to be safely recycled at the end. It provides an alternative to, and could even replace, increasingly scarce tropical hardwoods, treated woods and less sustainable materials.

CO2 emissions lower than most construction materials

Accoya has been tested for greenhouse gas emissions and has been found to emit significantly lower amounts of CO2 than a wide range of common construction materials. This includes uPVC and aluminium, which both emit excessively large amounts of CO2 in comparison, and a range of other sustainable timbers.

The material has received C2C Gold and C2C Platinum (Material Health) Certification. C2C stands for Cradle to Cradle and the philosophy was inspired by the concept of a circular economy. In order to achieve C2C certification, the material is assessed and must excel in terms of:

  • Material health
  • Material recycling
  • Renewable energy and carbon management
  • Water management and social responsibility

The culmination of over half a century of scientific inquiry

Developed over eight decades and countless research hours, the production method for Accoya® wood is based on the process of acetylation. Accoya is actually New Zealand grown Radiata Pine wood which is modified via this process. When it’s produced, the chemical structure of the wood is modified from the surface to the core, however no toxic chemicals are added in.

Accoya® wood can be used for virtually any application; whether it’s windows, doors, decking, cladding, or something else it’s quickly becoming the go to material for exterior applications and we at Reddish strive to use it as widely as possible. It can be even be used in applications which were previously only possible with non-sustainable materials. And as it’s a completely non-toxic product, the material is fully biodegradable.

Rigorously tested for complete quality assurance

Accoya® wood has been proven to withstand even the toughest of external environments. It’s been strenuously tested over an extended period in a range of different conditions, including above ground and in water. This has resulted in it being guaranteed to last 50 years above ground and 25 years when in contact with direct soil.

As a result of its exceptional durability and dimensional stability, Accoya® wood requires significantly less maintenance than other types of timber. When compared to unmodified wood, coatings can last up to 3 times longer.
