Made to measure sash windows: Crafted for character and performance

Last Updated: 29 May 2026

If you own a Victorian, Edwardian or Georgian property, off-the-shelf windows rarely fit. Made to measure sash windows give you the exact width, height and profile to match your opening – no filler strips, no compromised sight lines, no lost character. At Reddish Joinery, we manufacture timber and uPVC vertical sliders to your precise specification from our Stockport facility, then install them across Cheshire and the North West.

Why bespoke timber sash windows outperform standard sizes

Timber Georgian sliding sash windows

A standard window assumes a standard opening. Period properties rarely have one. Walls settle, reveals vary, and original joinery was always made to fit the individual frame. Ordering to exact dimensions means no gaps around the frame, no cold bridging and no compromise on the traditional proportions that make sliding sash windows architecturally correct.

Beyond accuracy, a custom timber sash window lets you specify:

  • Glazing bar pattern – six-over-six, two-over-two or matched to original
  • Bottom rail depth – deeper rails read as more authentic on pre-1920 elevations
  • Finish – factory spray finish in any RAL or BS colour, ready to install
  • Glass type – slimline double glazing retains period proportions while cutting heat loss

At Reddish Joinery, our CNC router cuts timber to tolerances that hand tools simply cannot match, so the sash slides cleanly and seals consistently from day one.

Timber vs uPVC sash windows: which is best for your home?

Both materials are available as made to measure vertical sliders, and both have a place depending on your property and planning situation.

Timber sash uPVC sash
**Authenticity** Highest – grain, weight and profile match originals Good – deep bottom rail and Georgian bar options
**Maintenance** Coat within 18-24 months, then every 6-8 years Wipe clean, no painting needed
**Lifespan** 60+ years with care; Accoya guaranteed 50 years Long-lasting; fully recyclable
**Planning** Preferred in conservation areas and listed buildings Check with local authority first
**Energy rating** Excellent with double glazing; timber is a natural insulator A-rated achievable with multi-chamber uPVC profiles

For homeowners in conservation areas, our team can advise on which material is most likely to satisfy your local authority. As a general rule, timber is the preferred choice for listed buildings and those within protected streetscapes, because it replicates the original material and can be profiled to match surviving joinery.

Heritage detailing: getting the proportions right

The wrong window ruins a period elevation. Correct proportions are non-negotiable on Victorian terraces, Edwardian villas and Georgian townhouses. This is where made to measure ordering pays back in full.

Our team surveys your opening before anything is manufactured. We measure the frame reveal, check the sub-sill condition, note any existing glazing bar positions and photograph the surrounding joinery so the new window is designed to sit correctly within the wall. You will not receive a window that is 10mm short and shimmed out with filler.

For Accoya tilt and slide projects, we have previously matched original 25mm Georgian bars and finished frames in period-appropriate cream to sit flush with surrounding brickwork – so to the average onlooker, the property looks as it always did, while the homeowner enjoys modern ventilation and weather resistance.

What materials do we use?

White Accoya wood timber sliding sash windows

We manufacture bespoke sash windows in three main materials:

African Sapele hardwood – a dense, durable timber with a close grain that takes paint and stain evenly. UV-resistant finish, guaranteed for 50 years in exterior use.

Accoya – a high-performance engineered European Redwood, modified through acetylation to make it dimensionally stable and naturally rot-resistant. Guaranteed for 50 years as an Accoya approved installer. Ideal for exposed elevations where ordinary softwood would require frequent attention.

uPVC – manufactured using Spectus vertical slider profile, with Pilkington glazing achieving up to an A rating for energy efficiency. Available in white, cream and a range of woodgrain effects. The tilt-in facility makes cleaning upper floors straightforward.

All three options are available as made to measure vertical sliders. Your choice will depend on your budget, planning restrictions and how much ongoing maintenance you want to carry out.
