Supalite vs Lantern Roofs: which replacement conservatory roof is best?

Last Updated: 28 September 2023

Do you get limited use from your conservatory because it just is not comfortable to be in? If so, you really should consider a replacement roof. This can eradicate leaks, draughts and dramatically improve thermal performance, so it does not suffer from extreme heat and bitter cold.

Here at Reddish Joinery, we can replace your conservatory roof with a Supalite roof or a selection of lantern roofs, and we’ve taken a closer look at both options in this blog.

Supalite tiled roofs

Small SupaLite Conservatory RoofThe combination of multiple layers of insulation that sit underneath a layer of hardwearing tiles, Supalite tiled roofs are one of the best replacement roof options available today. Their features include:

  • Supalite roofs offer unrivalled thermal performance, achieving U values of just 0.18 W/m2k. Therefore, there is ample opportunity to lower your heating bills.
  • Thanks to a breathable membrane, the insulation in a Supalite roof is proofed against humidity. So, if you would like to create a kitchen conservatory or another type of room where plenty of moisture will be present, you can.
  • Available with Extralight or Tapco Slate tiles, and various tile colours, there are lots of different looks available for selection.
  • These tiles also come with a 25-year guarantee, although they are expected to last for 50 years or more.
  • With the inside ceiling being plastered, your conservatory will feel just like another room in the house. This ceiling can also be vaulted and fitted with integral spotlights, if desired.
  • To allow more natural light inside the structure, Supalite roofs can also be fitted with rooflights or windows.

Lantern roofs

Lantern roofs are traditionally fitted to orangeries, although these lavish structures also make an excellent conservatory roof replacement. We have 3 types available for fitting: Ultrasky flat skylights, Ultrasky pitched roofs, and beautifully handcrafted, made-to-measure timber roof lanterns. Here are some of their features:

  • Lantern roofs have a minimalist design and slender rafters. This means that plenty of light can flow inside and brighten up your conservatory.
  • They are bordered by an insulated pelmet ceiling that has been manufactured to the insulation standards of a tiled/warm roof. Therefore, they keep energy bills low and conservatories feeling warm and cosy when it is cold.
  • As the pelmet adds a small amount of shade, it reduces solar gain and subsequent overheating. To reduce solar gain and the risk of overheating further, they can also be fitted with self-cleaning, solar control glass.
  • This internal pelmet ceiling can be fitted with spotlights, pendant lighting and speakers, allowing you to set the perfect evening ambience. As the ceiling is plastered, you also get a room that feels more like the others in your home.
  • Keeping a lantern roof in tip-top condition is super simple because they feature low maintenance aluminium frames or top caps and easy-to-clean glazing. Plus, the pelmet ceiling makes it possible to climb onto the roof and walk around to clean it but be sure to take all necessary health & safety steps when doing so.
